By noon that next day, Henry had recovered enough from his hangover to move about town and do his business. He slunk to the lower castle as the sun reached its highest peak, with most of a mind to finally Lord Hans Capon again. It had been a bit, and he hadn’t gotten much measure of how the man was doing since then.

He made conversation with guard Janoslav as he wandered up the stairs towards the higher floors. Sir Capon, Janoslav told him, was still in his chambers, as he had been for most of the past week. And he’d been a beast, by the sounds of it.

Henry pushed the doors open gently. He hadn’t put much thought to the whole nobles and fancy castles thing when he’d first arrived at Pirkstein. Too much else on his mind. But now he did spare a thought to how odd it was, being able to just slip into a nobleman’s chambers this way.

In which an unhinged peasant and an unhinged nobleman get utterly, blindingly wasted. )

The employees at the Perk reeeeally wanted to make sure you know it was pumpkin spice latte season. There were several ads. There was a life si3 (for a human) cardboard cutout of a PSL. Someone had stuck a scarecrow in the corner with a cup in its hand, which, calm down, it was t even Labor Day yet.

And boy, did they not expect anybody to order a regular iced mocha.

Kitty got her drink, took her seat, and tried to ignore the judgmental and confused glances from the workers. She even got up to move to the other side of her table so they could at least be confused at her back.

As established, Harley now had a great big bland-looking van.

But that was not all: Harley also had an accomplice! No, not the kid this time, because Cass had begged off on the basis of having gotten her little life's worth of dusty antique shops in just scouting all of them over the past couple of weeks, and also because Harley had need of someone who actually knew how to drive and who had a smidge more experience breaking into places.

So... She'd handwavily roped in Remy.

And now the van, Remy, Harley, and the whispersilk cloak currently still shoved into a bag were all nearing their first target, an antique shop in a part of town that was probably relatively quiet even when it wasn't the dead of night - and when it was, well... It really was dead out there. No movement along the street outside of the van itself.

Perfect conditions for the start of a heist!

"Okay, we should be... two blocks out," Harley said from the passenger side, surveying her map - yes, a physical one with squiggles and notes all over it. "Ca-- my associate says there's an alley on the left side of the place? With a side door into the building. That's how we get the goods."

If anyone asked, Luma would insist that her refusal to have anything to do with the boxes of sweaters that had arrived that morning was out of some stubborn refusal to admit that summer was almost over and they'd be moving into fall soon. As if not putting out the autumnal collections would somehow pause time and prevent it from marching forward.

This was, of course, not the reason at all. In fact, Luma found fall to be much more preferential. But the other members of the staff didn't know that.

Nor did they need to know that the real reason she refused to associate with the sweaters was that they were all red.

But she would be at the counter, painting her nails in summery jewel tones, if anyone needed her for anything else.

It was the last Thursday of the month, so Liz was spending the morning busy working on making sure that the final end of month report was finished and that the spreadsheets were being finalised. They'd spent time in Dublin and it'd been great, but Tony had an idea and that idea involved a bakery that they clearly needed to own in Paris. Which made sense only to him. But, unfortunately for everyone else, Steve was indulging him on this whim.

Which mostly ended up meaning visiting a baker's dozen (ha) of them to try out the wares. Well, Steve was trying out the wares because Tony was but a mortal man. Who had a cup of coffee at each place and whichever treat that Steve deemed the best of the bunch.

"Okay, next up..." Tony muttered, looking at the street signs to get his bearings again as they exited the last stop.

Heist time was approaching! And for that, Harley had need of a mode of transportation that could hold a lot more stuff than the Chevelle she kept wishy-washying about whether to keep or not. A mode of transportation like, say, a huge van. Which was exactly what she'd gone out shopping for that fantastic Wednesday night!

Well, "shopping". Look, she couldn't be blamed if someone just happened to leave a convenient van just laying around just right out on the street, all alone and ripe for the taking for someone with the right skill set. If anything, Harley was doing the poor thing a favor! She was going to take it on an adventure!

So, long story short: now, Harley had a van.

I am stupid tired after work today and I need to read some meta to get me back on my feet. Please donate to this charity.

Pose a question (or as many as you'd like, and they don't all have to be in one comment, so you can come back later and add more if you want) to your fellow players about the game or their characters, and they will Wall-of-Text if they want to, look, I know how some of you are answer them. They can be personal or silly. You don't have to answer all of them! Nothing counts in game, of course and etc.

Questions might include "Which of your characters are you the most like?", "Which BDE was your favorite?", "What music do you RP to?", etc.

Check in throughout the day to add questions/answer questions that have been added! And be nice, as always.

This time around we need three teachers to help our new students adjust, readjust, or continue to adjust to Fandom's little quirks (you know, the squirrels, the raccoons, the sometimes everyone turns into a child...).

Please volunteer if your teacher will be the following:

  • Non-antagonistic about helping out someone (ICly, your character can be signed up against their will, but, please don't sign up if they're not going to be helpful to a newbie).

  • You have the time to field questions from a newbie, and your character will be around consistently for the first few weeks of the semester.

  • The new students arrive Saturday, August 30th, so online availability for at least part of that day

Marc's stuff had been pretty easy to take care of. They could've put it off if Illyana needed them to stick close by. But she swore she didn't and Marc figured may as well get it over with since he'd booked the appointments already.

Nothing urgent. Just some things he had to look at personally, including some property he was debating investing in. Yeah, place was a dump. But it was in the neighborhood and would be somewhere he could stash things other than in Steven's apartment. Maybe even put a car or something in the garage space it had too.

On the way back he handwavily texted Watts to see if he needed anything. Then checked in with Illyana.

Watts reminded him they needed vegetables for their dinner, so Marc stopped for groceries on the way back. He debated getting a steak for himself but figured if he came out again while they were still in London he could always order something.

After that he headed back, taking the ancient elevator up to their floor and letting himself into the apartment.

"It's us," he said, as he came in.

Mind the cat! Steven said from the mirror by the doorway.

Right, they had the cat with them. Marc kept an eye out to make sure it didn't get out while he closed the door behind him.

It took a day or two for Henry to settle fully back into this life. Lord Radzig had returned him to Bernard's service almost immediately; those two days were full of long patrols and precious little impressions, the full weight of Skalitz settling back on him like a shroud now that he'd returned to these familiar places.

After that brief glimpse at the start of it, he'd seen hide nor hair of Hans Capon. The man was an arrogant twat, that was true, and Henry shouldn't care. Yet that glimpse had brought back the memories of their hunt-- days ago for Capon, months for Henry. He found himself wondering if his Lordship was recovering properly. He'd still had the limp a few days ago, after all.

By the third day, though, his time languishing in the stuffier corners of his mind was up. He'd been ordered up to the upper castle early in the morning -- something about nearby Neuhof, and a horrific crime committed there. Down below by the stairs stood Captain Bernard, gruff and uninterested, along with a small group of soldiers, all dressed in the bright yellow of the House of Leipa.

Captain Bernard was curt. "Follow me, keep quiet and do exactly as you're told," he said. "I don't know what Sir Radzig sees in you, and I don't care. If you're to ride with my men, I expect you to listen."

Yes, sir! )

Raiden had initially planned on throwing a Labor Day/informal last day of summer beach bonfire party, but Gluttony probably shouldn't host a party on the day everyone has a flavor unless we want an awkward cannibalism incident he had run into a few logistical difficulties.

No matter! He could pivot, and thus today he was putting up flyers around town, whistling Taylor Swift songs (off key) in celebration of her good news as he went:

Prompto usually came in to do his work at the animal shelter on Wednesday, sure, but there was no way he would have missed the chance to celebrate a good number of Furnado's denizens on National Dog Day! Sorry, cats! But today was all about those good old boys, those peppy puppers, the delightful doggos, and Prompto, as a big canine fan himself (he'd even actually been one several times!), was going to go all out.

They had a big old banner outside and there was a big old dog-friendly cake, plenty of treats and toys and anything he could think of to celebrate dogs for their day, while giving copious amounts of apologies to the cats and promises to do the same when their day came around in October (which was close to his birthday, too, so that was cool, right?), and, besides, didn't they pretty much have every Caturday? It wouldn't hurt to give their other furry brethren a bit of a special day, right?

Right!

Also, puppies wearing party hats was a good reason to do anything, really, if you asked him!

When Gladio saw a Musical Yoga class on the schedule for that day, he almost considered dropping in on it. It made, he supposed, some sense; he kind of liked the quiet connection with the world when he did yoga, but he could see how maybe some soft music, some nice calming classical or new age stuff could help people with their forms and meditation.

The thumping metal music that was spilling from the classroom door once they got started, though? That, he was a little less sure of, but then he remembered his last yoga instructor here on the island, and it made a little more sense.

He did check in to see if Diaz actually had stopped in to teach this particular musical yoga lesson, but alas, it was just some gremlin with some surprisingly impressive headbanging hair (did they even grow hair?) at the head of the class this time.

Not exactly what he'd have gone with for the concept, but, hey, if it worked for them, it worked for them.

Ignis had to admit: some of his favorite days here at the diner were the days when he came in to discover that there was an influx in a certain ingredient, be it by ordering blunder or random chance, because there were few things he enjoyed quite as much as turning cooking into a puzzle to be solved. To take a particular ingredient and figure out interesting ways to come up with new recipehs and try different things. Or stick to improving classic staples. Or take something familiar and turn it just a little one way or another.

The challenge was fun, and the results were usually exceptional, and so, with that, once he'd gotten his coffee made, he settled in to figure out some new and interesting ways to bring miso, specifically, to the specials board today.

It helped, as well, that he'd had a very productive weekend filled with promising prospective for the new Ravnica property filled with robust negotiations...and excellent kitchen spaces.

I'll start with the tl;dr summary to make sure everyone sees it and then explain further: As of September 1, we will temporarily be forced to block access to Dreamwidth from all IP addresses that geolocate to Mississippi for legal reasons. This block will need to continue until we either win the legal case entirely, or the district court issues another injunction preventing Mississippi from enforcing their social media age verification and parental consent law against us.

Mississippi residents, we are so, so sorry. We really don't want to do this, but the legal fight we and Netchoice have been fighting for you had a temporary setback last week. We genuinely and honestly believe that we're going to win it in the end, but the Fifth Circuit appellate court said that the district judge was wrong to issue the preliminary injunction back in June that would have maintained the status quo and prevented the state from enforcing the law requiring any social media website (which is very broadly defined, and which we definitely qualify as) to deanonymize and age-verify all users and obtain parental permission from the parent of anyone under 18 who wants to open an account.

Netchoice took that appellate ruling up to the Supreme Court, who declined to overrule the Fifth Circuit with no explanation -- except for Justice Kavanaugh agreeing that we are likely to win the fight in the end, but saying that it's no big deal to let the state enforce the law in the meantime.

Needless to say, it's a big deal to let the state enforce the law in the meantime. The Mississippi law is a breathtaking state overreach: it forces us to verify the identity and age of every person who accesses Dreamwidth from the state of Mississippi and determine who's under the age of 18 by collecting identity documents, to save that highly personal and sensitive information, and then to obtain a permission slip from those users' parents to allow them to finish creating an account. It also forces us to change our moderation policies and stop anyone under 18 from accessing a wide variety of legal and beneficial speech because the state of Mississippi doesn't like it -- which, given the way Dreamwidth works, would mean blocking people from talking about those things at all. (And if you think you know exactly what kind of content the state of Mississippi doesn't like, you're absolutely right.)

Needless to say, we don't want to do that, either. Even if we wanted to, though, we can't: the resources it would take for us to build the systems that would let us do it are well beyond our capacity. You can read the sworn declaration I provided to the court for some examples of how unworkable these requirements are in practice. (That isn't even everything! The lawyers gave me a page limit!)

Unfortunately, the penalties for failing to comply with the Mississippi law are incredibly steep: fines of $10,000 per user from Mississippi who we don't have identity documents verifying age for, per incident -- which means every time someone from Mississippi loaded Dreamwidth, we'd potentially owe Mississippi $10,000. Even a single $10,000 fine would be rough for us, but the per-user, per-incident nature of the actual fine structure is an existential threat. And because we're part of the organization suing Mississippi over it, and were explicitly named in the now-overturned preliminary injunction, we think the risk of the state deciding to engage in retaliatory prosecution while the full legal challenge continues to work its way through the courts is a lot higher than we're comfortable with. Mississippi has been itching to issue those fines for a while, and while normally we wouldn't worry much because we're a small and obscure site, the fact that we've been yelling at them in court about the law being unconstitutional means the chance of them lumping us in with the big social media giants and trying to fine us is just too high for us to want to risk it. (The excellent lawyers we've been working with are Netchoice's lawyers, not ours!)

All of this means we've made the extremely painful decision that our only possible option for the time being is to block Mississippi IP addresses from accessing Dreamwidth, until we win the case. (And I repeat: I am absolutely incredibly confident we'll win the case. And apparently Justice Kavanaugh agrees!) I repeat: I am so, so sorry. This is the last thing we wanted to do, and I've been fighting my ass off for the last three years to prevent it. But, as everyone who follows the legal system knows, the Fifth Circuit is gonna do what it's gonna do, whether or not what they want to do has any relationship to the actual law.

We don't collect geolocation information ourselves, and we have no idea which of our users are residents of Mississippi. (We also don't want to know that, unless you choose to tell us.) Because of that, and because access to highly accurate geolocation databases is extremely expensive, our only option is to use our network provider's geolocation-based blocking to prevent connections from IP addresses they identify as being from Mississippi from even reaching Dreamwidth in the first place. I have no idea how accurate their geolocation is, and it's possible that some people not in Mississippi might also be affected by this block. (The inaccuracy of geolocation is only, like, the 27th most important reason on the list of "why this law is practically impossible for any site to comply with, much less a tiny site like us".)

If your IP address is identified as coming from Mississippi, beginning on September 1, you'll see a shorter, simpler version of this message and be unable to proceed to the site itself. If you would otherwise be affected, but you have a VPN or proxy service that masks your IP address and changes where your connection appears to come from, you won't get the block message, and you can keep using Dreamwidth the way you usually would.

On a completely unrelated note while I have you all here, have I mentioned lately that I really like ProtonVPN's service, privacy practices, and pricing? They also have a free tier available that, although limited to one device, has no ads or data caps and doesn't log your activity, unlike most of the free VPN services out there. VPNs are an excellent privacy and security tool that every user of the internet should be familiar with! We aren't affiliated with Proton and we don't get any kickbacks if you sign up with them, but I'm a satisfied customer and I wanted to take this chance to let you know that.

Again, we're so incredibly sorry to have to make this announcement, and I personally promise you that I will continue to fight this law, and all of the others like it that various states are passing, with every inch of the New Jersey-bred stubborn fightiness you've come to know and love over the last 16 years. The instant we think it's less legally risky for us to allow connections from Mississippi IP addresses, we'll undo the block and let you know.
